Safe Lifting in Real Estate and Hospitality: Reducing Risk, Protecting Teams, and Improving Daily Operations

Safe lifting plays a critical role in the real estate and hospitality industry, where daily operations often involve moving mattresses, luggage, furniture, equipment, and supplies. These tasks are essential to maintaining properties and delivering a positive experience, but they also present a significant risk of injury if not performed correctly. Improper lifting is a leading cause of workplace incidents, particularly back strains and shoulder injuries, making it essential for employees to understand and apply proper techniques.

Because lifting tasks vary widely—from handling small boxes to moving large or awkward furniture—it is important to recognize that each situation carries a different level of risk. Employees across roles, including housekeeping, maintenance, food and beverage, and guest services, regularly engage in material handling activities. Identifying these exposures and approaching each lift with awareness helps reduce the likelihood of injury and property damage.

Safe lifting begins with preparation. Employees should assess the weight and stability of an object, plan their route, and clear any obstacles before lifting. If an item is too heavy or difficult to manage alone, assistance or mechanical aids should always be used. Proper technique is equally important: standing close to the load, keeping feet shoulder-width apart, bending at the knees, and lifting with the legs rather than the back all help minimize strain. Keeping the load close to the body, avoiding twisting, and setting items down carefully further reduce risk. When using carts or similar equipment, pushing is generally safer than pulling.

Maintaining a safe work environment also requires consistent reinforcement. Organizations should provide regular training for both new and existing employees, encourage reporting of damaged equipment, and keep safety practices visible through reminders in key areas. Supervisors play an important role by addressing unsafe behaviors and reinforcing proper techniques.

By combining awareness, proper lifting methods, and ongoing training, organizations in the real estate and hospitality sector can significantly reduce injuries, improve efficiency, and create a safer, more resilient workplace.
